Guiding organizations through the hardest of moments

Guiding organizations through the hardest of moments

Hello, it’s me! The small nonprofit guy whose books you read, or whose course you took, and who you haven’t heard from since, oh… sometime in 2025. Which already feels like the distant past.

I have some BIG news to share soon. But first, I’ve been thinking recently: “Why hire Erik?”

Is it because I know a lot about small (and very small) nonprofits? I mean, that’s a good reason. But I don’t think that’s the main reason. I’m not just a guy who knows a lot.

I’m a guy who has seen a lot. I can help guide you through the hardest moments of your nonprofit’s life.

Small nonprofits are fragile. They are held together by passion and dedication and a lot of duct tape.

And I’ve been there. I was vice president when the E.D. got a terminal cancer diagnosis. I was board president when the E.D. told me we needed to merge with another nonprofit. I was board president when the staff went into revolt. I was treasurer when we went into lockdown because of COVID. I was treasurer when I had to audit the books to see if the administrator had done something nefarious.

(I hope it’s clear these were all separate organizations, ha.)

As a consultant, I’ve sat in the room when an executive director dropped a bombshell in a retreat and accused a board member of undermining her. I’ve mediated a founder-turned-board-president and the new E.D. who were at loggerheads.

And this doesn’t count the day-to-day challenges I faced as the director of two small nonprofits and the interim director of two more.

You don’t have to go through these moments alone. Sometimes you need someone to bounce ideas off. Sometimes you need someone to mediate. Or to show you another way.

That’s what I do.

Book a call with me if you’re navigating something hard right now, or reply to this email if you’d like to talk about a retreat for your organization (and perhaps prevent one of these scenarios from occurring).

And I’ve got something new coming that I can’t wait to tell you about.

I’ve read a ton of books and blogs and newsletters about the topics but they’re all for bigger orgs with dedicated staff to each task. Your words were the first that I came across that actually spoke to KIOO and me directly. Thank you for that.
